Why I'm Writing about Mainz
In the summer of 2022 I led my 3rd GAPP exchange to Germany. My school, Station Camp High School, in Gallatin, TN, USA, was partnered with Integrierte Gesamtschule Kurth Schumacher in Ingelheim am Rhein. My students were paired with families here, with whom they would stay three weeks--attending school, experiencing German culture, and seeing a bit of the area.
I was hosted, as I have been the previous three years, by my colleague Carola and her husband Hendrik, who call Mainz home. It's just a short, 25-minute drive from IGS, but it's a much different world: a good-sized city, full of history, with new things to explore every time I come.
Having been here twice already, I feel like I'll be able to dig deeply into the city and draw on previous experiences to flesh out what it is like to be here.
The reflections published here come from my visits to Mainz in 2018, 2019, and 2022, as well as from a trip to Berlin the week before the exchange began in 2022.
